Salthouse

Salthouse had been a small port in the Middle Ages. Ships sailed accross from the larger ports of Cley And Wiveton, along the Salthouse Mayne Channel which ran between the beach and the road. In the 17th century, when Dutch engineers were active reclaiming the fens, one Van Hasedunck, built an embankment in 1637 that cut off the channel.
Salthouse Heath is high up behind the village. It is well worth an evening visit in spring and early summer when two of this areas special birds can be heard - the nightingale and the nightjar. On the Heath, between Cley in the west and Kelling in the east, there are a dozen or so Bronze Age barrows.

The church of St. Nicholas was built between 1497 and 1503 by Sir Henry Heydon of Baconsthorpe Castle. Henry's wife, Anne, was the daughter of Geoffrey Boleyn, who's granddaughter was Queen Anne Boleyn. Henry died in 1503 just after the completion of the church. Stanley Cowell
