Overy Staithe is part of the parish of Burnham Overy, one of seven Burnham parishes. It is now a popular mooring for yachtsmen, but before the River Burn silted up, it was further up river that seagoing ships docked to unload. In the 15th century it was at Burnham Overy town - said at the time to be the best harbour between Harwich and Newcastle - and earlier, back to the 13th century it was Burnham Thorpe.

On the coast road are the attached windmill and watermill. The latter is dated 1737 is built over the Burn. The windmill was added in 1814, and burnt out in a fire in 1935. The Miller's House is dated 1744. To the east, overlooking the staithe, is a fine windmill complete with sails. All these are now private residences.
