Holkham

The south entrance to Holkham Park.

Holkham has two main attractions - its wonderful beach at Holkham Gap with its clear, bracing air - and Holkham Hall in the Park.

One of the finest sea-walks in Britain is that between Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham. Along the sea-shore where every footfall crushes purple and orange shells. Then there is the option of a return journey through the pines.

Holkham Hall, the seat of the Earls of Leicester and the Coke family. A Palladian mansion set back from the sea, a mile from Holkham Gap. In parkland beside a man-made lake, it was built 1730-44. It was in the 19th century when the terraces and fountains were added. The park, avenues of ilex, oak and beech; the temple and obelisk at its centre.

St. Withburga's Church is within the park, having been mostly rebuilt in 1870. The village was rebuilt outside the park at the time of the Hall's construction.
