Cockthorpe

A tiny hamlet one mile south-east of Stiffkey, Cockthorpe is approached up a long hill from the coast, seperated from Langham by an old World War II airfield. Its small sturdy church, All Saints', has an early 14th century tower and was saved from ruin in the mid-20th century. However, it stands unused at present.

There are memorials to members of its most prominant family, the Calthorpes, dating back to the early 17th century. One, to Sir James Calthorpe (1615) and his wife Barbara, who "was much comforted by the sight of 193 of her children and their offspring at the age of 86 years." There are no remains of the Calthorpe home.
