Brancaster

Brancaster Staithe

Brancaster is an attractive and popular coastal village. It was a settlement in Roman times, named Branodvnvm, though there are no remains.

Brancaster Staithe
To the east of the village is the Staithe, which is an ancient harbour and now much used by small-boat sailors. To the north of the church is a golf course and the fine beach.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin has a 15th century tower. One of the most interesting features of this church is encountered upon entering. To the left as you enter is a carved wooden figure of St. Matthew with a gospel in one hand and a money bag in the other. It previously stood on a wall post of the old hammer beam roof. The carved wooden font cover dates from 1493. It has concealed weights to allow the lower section to slide upwards.
