Blakeney Point is a sand bar or spit, an example of east-west longshore drift. Sand and shingle at the shore's edge and sand dunes. Behind it, mud banks and salt marsh. It is a vital place for birds, none more so than terns; Common, Sandwich and Little terns nest in a huge colony on the point. Amongst the other sea shore birds that you can expect to see are; Oystercatcher, Ringed Plover, Godwit and Dunlin. On the point will be Linnet, Meadow Pipit, Wheatear and Skylark. Plants growing on Blakeney Point include; Sea campion, Sea-purslane, Stonecrop, Thrift, Marram grass, Sea lavender and the magnificent Yellow Horned Poppy. But the most famous residents of Blakeney Point are, of course, the Common and Grey Seals. To reach the Point; sail from Blakeney or Morston quay, or walk along the beach from Cley. A. Haig |
