West Beckham & East Beckham |
|
The Beckhams, West and East, stand above Sheringham south of the A148. West Beckham is much the larger, stretching almost to Bodham. East Beckham is not much more than a hamlet. ![]() Three-quarters of a mile south of West Beckham at perhaps the second highest point in Norfolk, after Pigg's Grave, stood some radio transmitting masts which provided surprising elegance to the landscape. Alas, they have been repaced by a single modern version. In the late nineteenth century West Beckham church, All Saints', was in a poor state of repair, while down the road in East Beckham, St. Helen's had been a ruin since 1602. So the decision was made to build St.Helen's and All Saints' in a more central location. Both old buildings were dismantled and contributed to the new church, to the design of the old St.Helen's. The latter provided the stonework for the south porch and the chancel arch; while parts of the doorways and some of the windows came from All Saints'. Russell Freeman |
